47 Portraits: The Video Investigation

The LAB will usher in the new millennium with a very special one-person exhibition by media artist Lise Swenson, founder of TILT (Teaching Intermedia Literacy Tools) and recipient of the Bay Guardianīs Goldie Award.

Liseīs new exhibition, 47 Portraits, will open on February 4, 200 following her one month residency at the LAB. The ambitious installation will comprise 47 monitors in the gallery space. Playing on each monitor will be the portrait of a single individual. The monitors will be mounted on a variety of second-hand suitcases, and the head and shoulder video portrayals will explore issues around demographics, identity, politics and the conceptual basis of the portrait. 47 Portraits, will run through March 4, 2000, and will include an evening of spoken word curated by Daphne Gottlieb, a panel discussion on the future of media art moderated by Michael Naimark, and a candlelight salon during which partrons may sit for a video portrait with the artist.
