Knowing You, Knowing Me
Knowing You, Knowing Me Exhibition
4/28/00 to 5/27/00
"Knowing You, Knowing Me reflects a condition of looking outside oneself in order to better understand others, thus broadening a capacity for self-awareness and an ability to share. If many contemporary art practices seem rooted in tactics of irony or trapped within the fun house world of pop culture, what is presented in this exhibition is a sincere engagement that eschews acerbity or the superficially topical. Many of the artistsī works tackle identity issues via a discourse of their own bodies or desires or both. The body and oneīs relationship to it, either mentally or physically, form the essential series of linkages that unite these seemingly disparate pieces."

Swiss artist Bessie Nagerīs installation addresses the social nature of spaces in a direct and immediate manner: the viewer must literally travel through a tunnel constructed of plastic sheeting in order to experience her work and the other works in this exhibition.

Italian photographer Fabrizio Sacchetti challenges us to experience his work in relation to his sexual identity, a self that is also a social and historical construct.

Berkeley artist Emily Wilson pursues her sense of self through the dissection of her private life. In "Bills (Mostly)," Emily salvages the remains of her daily existence from credit card statements which she obsessively cuts and arranges in tiny rows on the floor. A catalogue accompanying the exhibition will be available at the gallery .

The Consul General of Switzerland will host the opening reception on Friday, April 28 from 6 to 9 PM. This project has been generously sponsored by The Consul General of Switzerland, San Francisco; The Rene di Rosa Foundation; Pro Helvetia; Milton Estes; and Dare and Themis Michos.
