Radical Epiphanies: A Series of Interdisciplinary Temporal Dislocations
Rika Ohara & The Nuclear Family
Shelter 8
11/20/99
Come celebrate your survival of "this chapter" of the Nuclear Age ina sentient glass fallout shelter. Rika Ohara returns to The LAB with her now-virtual performance company The Nuclear Family for the world premiere of Shelter 8, an interdisciplinary millennial dream. As the media supplants myth in both forming an expressing our collective consciousness, nuclear annihilation has become a modern Judgement Day defined by the very absence of a decisive event. Shelter 8 explores "nuclear temporality" by identifying recurrence, deferral and denial as central to our nuclear experience. This time-based installation incorporates animated static imagery, suspended choreography, and sound to cumulatively affect our perception of time and remind us of iconographic persistence of the mushroom cloud.
