Interdisciplinary artist Scott Arford's Static Room (4) is an immersive video and audio environment. Inside a room defined by four video screens, viewers will be immersed in a spinning, flickering, abstract world of manipulated video and audio static. In this fourth phase of his ongoing project to create an experiential, synaesthetic environment, Arford creates a space where the audio and visual components are inseparable pieces of a greater whole. Much of the video is created from TV static, bad connections, and other mistakes and inaccuracies. The remainder is composed of simple pulsating color fields. The manipulation and interlacing of images allows for the dizzying movement of geometric shapes that are imbedded into the flickering images themselves. Effects vary from the gentle pulsing of color tones to chromatic moiré patterns as complementary colors flicker and collide. The audio is digitally generated from the video imagery, mirroring the movement of the video. By omitting all representational images, the sounds and projections of Static Room (4) cease to portray an event, they become one an environment where the perceptual and physical qualities of sound and light merge to create a very direct singular experience. During the opening reception for the installation, Arford will perform a continuous live manipulation of the audio and video components of Static Room (4) deviating from the more composed approach of the stand-alone installation. Because the interior of the installation will not comfortably accommodate more than 10-15 people at one time, guests may wander in and around the work at their leisure throughout the course of the evening.
