In WANDERLUST in FableCity , Lemberg gyrates a wall of energy through each character and commences a ferociously individual quest to carve out a physical existence in a complicated and often duplicitous world. This tour de force solo performance is a chronicle of the quest for fame, sex, travel, and a life worth watching (on TV!). Yet, it is also an exploration of the cause and effect of overpowering wanderlust and its repercussions.
Lemberg, who comes from an extensive background in dance and theater,
creates two distinct movement languages for each character. Controlled,
precise and calculated movement characterizes Hera Anne. In her room,
a city looms in constant view though always out of her reach. As her grasp
upon her world becomes increasingly tenuous, time loops and surges and
geometric shapes are doorways into metaphysical states and code-breaking
links. Hera Anne, like Annie, must confront the physical confines of her
situation, mentally and spiritually transcending the walls of her room/prison
and defying the limitations of her identity.
Conversely, Annie Herowane is obsessed with the notion that historical
figures observe her in her daily life and unsure if there is really anything
to watch. Characterized by aggressive and spastically unpredictable movement,
Annie indelicately takes on the pitfalls and pervasiveness of her own
brand of wanderlust. While constantly second guessing herself, Annie’s
rage and desire catapults her out of her room and into a world she feels
no need to understand but will do anything to keep moving within its limelight.
Annie’s dances surge and abruptly recede as Lemberg’s anti-heroine
traverses revolutionary movements, stinky boys and energetic indecision
on this side of the sneaker.
Serber and Foodveyor’s video and subtle animation provide a view
into FableCity from the vantage point of each character. After building
a miniature city and shooting stills on a digital camera, Serber and Foodveyor
created a wall and window for Hera Anne. Through it is a courtyard and
view of FableCity. When shifting to Annie’s world, we leave Hera
Anne’s room and travel into the cityscape, focusing on and finally
entering into the room of a non-descript, small building buried in FableCity.
This is where Annie dreams. Serber and Foodveyor created subtle animations
in Adobe After Effects to depict traveling through the city as well as
the passage of time.
Cheryl Leonard created an original score for Hera Anne by bowing the box
springs of a mattress and processing and layering the sounds. The result
is a haunting composition, ungrounded and teetering between times. Conversely,
Annie surrenders herself to popular music, with a driving beat, often
propelling her into action with surprising consequence. Her section features
music by Porn, the Men of; Stereolab; The Fentones; Mark Spybey and Jean-Yves
Theriault; and Tipsy.
Lemberg, who has made Los Angeles her home for the last 5 years, is best
known for her work in the multi-media ensemble The RK Corral. She recently
work shopped sections of WANDERLUST in FableCity
at Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles, CA, recently debuted Fable
(a work in progress of the Hera Anne section) at the 2002 San Francisco
Butoh Festival and toured the critically acclaimed space western GoodGuy/BadGuy,
in which she depicted 7 characters. The RK Corral s Enie Macy & the
Ten Step Program toured extensively and was nominated for 2 Izzy Awards
in 1998. Lemberg has performed with The RK Corral at The LAB in San Francisco,
Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles, Sushi Performance Space in
San Diego, and had the honor of dancing for Akira Kasai in Exusiai (1998)
at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts in San Francisco.
The RK Corral is a production
company and locus, which supports and fosters work by a group of multimedia
artists based in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, who have been creating performance,
film and video within the integrated disciplines of dance, theater, video,
animatronics and music together since 1996. |
