The Telluric Currents is an installation that imagines invisible forces that flow through the earth and permeate space.  Light passing through slits cut in paper creates a dynamic sculptural shape of diffraction and interference patterns. Perception of projected forms change as viewers move through the gallery space, based on lines of sight and the motion of light. The title Telluric Currents is inspired by literal magnetic fields as well as the fictional occult power described in Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum.

The One Frame Cinema is a series of installations by Jesse Houlding that use light and other natural phenomenon to explore perception and the construction of meaning. By creating a relationship between the visible and the invisible, Houlding explores the boundary between the known and the unknown. The marks cut into paper are based on scientific drawings depicting lines of force, a systematic abstraction of an invisible power. Houlding is interested in the way we use visual systems such as scientific drawings to understand and explain natural phenomenon. His work draws on the need to explain the ways we negotiate the mixture of anxiety and wonder felt as we attempt to make sense of the world.
