Marin county native Sonny Smith began playing blues piano
in bars when he was nineteen years old. Skipping between the
Rocky Mountains of Denver, San Francisco, and Central America,
he began to write original songs, short stories and plays.
Smith's travels in Central America inspired his narrative
approach and original style of folk music. Sonny Smith's Stranger
Danger is an experimental performance that merges the traditions
of folk music, literature, and theater. Smith himself is featured
as a cab driver traveling through the streets of San Francisco
in the early hours of one morning on the job. Through monologue
and song, a portrait of the hardships of this life will emerge.
Several local guest musicians will appear as passengers along
the way. Stranger Danger is a new, site-specific piece created
for The LAB and a continuation of Smith's work at The Headlands
Center for the Arts.
