Open Form: Facebook Artists in Residence 2012-2017 marks the fifth anniversary of the founding of Facebook’s Artist in Residency Program (FB AIR), and features images of 225 site-specific art installations completed by artists at Facebook offices around the world since 2012. The book also includes introductions by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and FB AIR founder and director Drew Bennett, as well as a long-form essay by scholar and curator Natasha Boas that traces the evolution of Bay Area counterculture and cyberculture and examines the intersections between tech and art and the creative minds working in both fields.

The FB AIR program was formed in 2012 as an initiative of Facebook’s Analog Research Laboratory, an in-house analog design/print studio that was created by Facebook designers who wanted a place where they could step away from their screens and get back to their roots as physical makers. The AIR program began by inviting local San Francisco Bay Area artists to create site-specific art installations throughout the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, along with fine art prints in the ARL. As the program has grown, artists from around the world are invited to do projects in offices on four continents.

Open Form takes its title and framework from the theoretical concept defined by Polish architect Oskar Hansen in the mid-20th century. Hansen proposed rejecting the traditional model of the ‘all-knowing expert,’ instead emphasizing participation, process, and a destabilization of the hierarchical dynamic between an artist and viewer. The FB AIR program likewise champions art-as-process, and is invested in fostering meaningful connections between makers and diverse audiences globally.

All proceeds from sales of Open Form will benefit The Lab’s programming.
