Trumpeter, composer, and improviser Peter Evans brings his acclaimed quartet Being & Becoming to The Lab. Formed in 2017, Being & Becoming has become Evans’ primary compositional outlet, synthesizing an enormous range of influences, from jazz and experimental music to contemporary concert music and beyond. Evans, a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, leads the ensemble through works that draw on improvisational idioms, notated concert music, and an array of experimental approaches. The group features Nick Jozwiak on bass and synth, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums.

Ars Ludicra is the third studio album from Peter Evans’ group Being & Becoming, recorded in 2024 at the legendary Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey. Featuring Evans on a range of trumpets, piano, and electronics, Joel Ross on vibraphone and synth, Nick Jozwiak on bass and synth, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums, the album captures the band in peak form during a period of extensive touring and intense musical development.
